Lilly’s Foods, an Oregon-based company leading the hummus and salsa categories with its non-GMO, small batch recipes, touts 100% recyclable packaging, including tub and label. The brand has made efforts to commit to increasing sustainability overall. Lilly’s made the move to enlist in recyclable materials as its commitment to the health and well-being of consumers, families and the planet. Since their beginning, the brand has embarked on a handmade, craft process, including using non-GMO and organic chickpeas to drive this process. Lilly’s is also well-regarded for the brand’s commitment to using whole foods, rather than blended ingredients, to make fresh hummus and salsa products – such as real olive oil, pure organic sesame tahini and other clean, simple ingredients. Consumers can find Lilly’s hummus products in retail dairy cases nationwide. According to recent Nielsen data, 60% of North American consumers are concerned about sustainability in packaging waste. Lilly’s understands that their core, environmentally-conscious consumers value sustainable packaging practices and line up to meet their needs. As a brand committed to organic, non-GMO, flavorful hummus, the packaging transition was a clear next step. Discussing the decision to go with in-mold labels, Lilly’s Foods founder Lilly Miscoe says, “We were approached by suppliers that did inlaid labeling (pre-labeled packaging). This approach to packaging was specifically intriguing to us because we are a plant-based food brand, and providing our hummus and salsas in a package that is 100% recyclable and that minimizes packaging materials in an effort to be friendly to our earth is a primary consideration. Also, for the Lilly’s product, we find that an applied paper label is more likely to buckle and wrinkle with moisture from refrigeration. The appearance of our new containers improved drastically. We have full wrap coverage, brighter colors, and no malformation of the labeling due to exterior storage conditions. “However,” Miscoe adds, “This change required us to make a shift, in terms of manufacturing and design. Still, these shifts and the time associated with making the alterations were in the end a worthwhile investment to us.” According to Miscoe, Lilly’s Foods has always valued sustainability on par with organic ingredients and flavorful varieties. She adds, “By offering 100% recyclable packaging, we are fulfilling our mission of offering foods that are delicious, good for you and good for our earth, as well. We care a great deal about nourishing the lives of our consumers, overall – earth, body and soul. Lilly’s Foods has made its mission about more than superior hummus. A focus on environmental sustainability, organic ingredients and ethical sourcing has helped to steer each decision on the brand’s part. From retail store shelves to foodservice partnerships, Lilly’s strives to offer consumers products that bring more than better tasting food to the table. Lilly’s intends to offer quality ingredients to those looking for a better way to feed the ones they love. Miscoe says Lilly’s newest packaging initiative will continue to promote the quality that Lilly’s stands behind.
